UPDATE: As you’ll know if you look at the comments below (or if you could see the contents of my inbox!) there have been various issues with most of DARKEST NIGHT’s international releases. I’ve been trying to get information from my publishers for the last couple of weeks – sadly, I have no say in the release dates and no control over whether things go smoothly or not – and have updated the info below with what I know. Please let me know if you encounter any problems getting hold of the book, and I’ll do what I can to help…
DARKEST NIGHT is almost upon us – it will start making its way out into the world next week (and may already be on the shelves of a bookstore or two). So here are the release dates and pre-order links for the territories where the English edition is directly released – the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The rest of the world should get the English export edition in the coming weeks, and news about translated editions will follow when I have it…
United Kingdom – OUT NOW
Ireland – OUT NOW
USA – 26th January 2016 (NEW DATE)
UPDATE: I was very excited about DARKEST NIGHT coming out in the US at roughly the same time as the rest of the English editions, as it would have been the first time that had happened. Unfortunately, because of very boring issues to do with different formats and prices and North American trading areas, DARKEST NIGHT will now be released in paperback in January next year. Which is a little bit quicker than the previous books, but still a long wait – these types of decisions get made way above me, and all I can do is apologise to my American readers. Sorry.
Canada – 21st August (NEW DATE)
UPDATE: This is the edition I have had the most questions about, and the one I’ve been trying hardest to get to the bottom of. Essentially, it all boils down to distribution of HarperCollins titles being moved to a new warehouse in the US and some teething problems that accompanied the change-over, which resulted in copies not reaching Canadian stores in time for the release date. Apparently the problem has been resolved, and I’ve been told that the new date showing on both Amazon and Indigo (21st August) is correct, and that things should run smoothly this time. The Canadian edition of DARKEST NIGHT will be a trade (large-format) paperback, rather than a hardback. Again, these are things that I have no control over, but I am very sorry to all my Canadian readers who have been wondering what was going on…
Australia and New Zealand – 30th July (NEW DATE)
UPDATE: The various dates and pre-order buttons are retailer issues – the release date for Australia and New Zealand is (and has apparently always been) 30th July, and stock is apparently ready for the release to go smoothly. Let me know if you have any trouble finding copies after the 30th.
HarperCollins Australia (contains all retailer links)
HarperCollins New Zealand (contains retailer list)
South Africa – OUT NOW
UPDATE: The South African edition published as planned in June. Several retailers are out of stock, but I’m told new copies are on their way…

Hi Nate – sadly, the release date of the US edition of Darkest Night has been moved back to January. I’m sorry – I’ve been pushing for a simultaneous global release for the last three books, and I really thought it was going to happen this time, but release dates, as with formats and prices etc., are beyond my control. Your best best might be to order the Canadian edition, which should be released imminently…

June 17, 2015
Hello from Toronto (Canada)!
Many of my readers have been eagerly awaiting this novel. However, even though the stated release date for Canada was June 9, no book seller seems to be carrying this book (as of today – June 17)!!!!
Please let me know how one could purchase copies in Canada.
Thank you.

Hello! I have literally just emailed HarperCollins about this, as I just saw Amazon stating ‘Not yet released’ and Indigo only listing the UK hardback. I’ve asked them to let me know what is happening ASAP, and I’ll update this post as soon as I have more info. Sorry for the delay, and for the disappointment of your readers!

Hi Will, I just want to say how brilliant I thought the Department 19 series was. It’s been possibly the best series I’ve ever read and I really hope you make another series.
July 28, 2015
Another question, i saw the Canadian release date has been pushed back to August 21st, is that still for the hard cover version ?
January 13, 2016
Been waiting for this book since the beginning of last year. So happy that it’s finally going to be released in U.S. in less than 2 weeks. I have loved every bit of this series, and every one of my friends(Who read) has been forced to read at least the first book. One was so jealous when I got the 3rd and 4th. I hope you keep making books, and hopefully the next series will be as good as department 19, if not better. Thank you for bringing all of us the tense moments in the books. You are one of my favorite author’s ever.

This is an amazing book! I’m not much of a reader but man this is enough for me! So a serious question, will there ever be a movie, game, or tv show?

Hey is there any news on the U.S. release date? I thought it came out in January so I ordered it on Amazon in December and it is still listed as it doesn’t know when it would release, just curious when it’ll actually ship or when the release date will be if it got moved.

Dear Will- I would like to say that I originally was not a big book reader. I was more of a movie watcher and gamer etc, but ever since a friend of mine at school happened to have a Department 19 book (the first one), I was hooked. I borrowed his book, and could not put it down. I finished reading in a few days, and when I saw there was a whole series, I rushed to get them all and read them. When I heard that the series’ conclusion, Darkest Night, was coming out, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. I can honestly say I’ve never been more excited for anything related to books or literature before, and I’ve been reading a lot more ever since. I don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but thank you :)
